Thursday, the Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is the pinnacle of the United States judicial system and now, after 223 years, Jackson will be the first Black woman to sit on the court.

Throughout Justice Jackson's confirmation hearings, Republican's worked hard to try and present an argument that Jackson was not qualified for the position and attempted to sully her record. After taking in her experience as a Supreme Court clerk, a public defender, a district judge, her works as a judge for the Court of Appeals, along with her poise, determination and brilliance Jackson was confirmed with a 53-to-47 vote.

“Nobody’s going to steal my joy,” Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) said in regard to the vote. He also noted Judge Jackson’s elevation to the nation’s highest court exemplified “the promise of progress on which our democracy rests.”

Representation is proof of that progress and of the promise that all voices – especially voices from historically excluded groups – will be welcomed and heard. Black women and girls can finally see themselves reflected in the highest levels of government, from Vice President to Supreme Court Justice. This is more than just the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. This is a ceiling being shattered and inspiration for generations of Black girls to come. Ketanji Brown Jackson is unflappable, poised and the first Black woman to break this barrier.

May she not be the last.
